The 2011 International Sports Event Management Conference succeeded in proving itself yet again, as an exceptional and unique conference.
The two day conference included a pre conference workshop, a 2 day content packed conference agenda, extended networking opportunities through speed networking and also structured networking meetings, sponsored by UKTI. Delegates had plenty of opportunity to meet fellow sports industry professionals in a friendly, relaxed and informal environment.
During the two day conference, some of the most experienced and influential individuals in the field took to the stage to share their insight and experience, helping to promote the highest standards of best practice and innovation with help make sport a growth sector despite difficult global business conditions
The first day saw an opening speech from Dan Jones at Deloitte who took us through an analysis of trends in the global sports events industry, which set the scene for a packed 2 days.
Day one carried on to talk about creating an event’s footprint and generating new revenues opportunities through fanparks and other forms of ‘out of home viewing’, followed by discussion on global perspectives on event management, a case study from Daniela Banz at FIFA on the 2011 Women’s World Cup.
The afternoon saw a powerful line-up of speakers including Doug Waller from the ICC, Mohamed Hanzab, President of the International Centre for Sport Security, Richard Worth, Chairman of the Americas Cup and Lord Sebastian Coe, VP of the IAAF and Chairman of LOCOG.
After day one’s conference programme, the 5th ISEM Awards Evening began with a drinks reception before the attendees took their seats for dinner and the ceremony. The evening was co-hosted by Kevin Roberts from SportBusiness and Adrienne Lawler, a regular presenter for BBC, ITV & SKY and founder of iNewsU..
The evening proved a fantastic success and recognised well deserved winners in 9 different categories.
Winners included Designwerk for the UEFA Europa League Final 2011, London and Partners for London, Sport Event Denmark for the Sports Events Made in Denmark, Longreach International Ltd for the 2010 Ryder Cup, Creative Technology for the 2010 Ryder Cup, IFNA for the World Netball Championships 2011, British Cycling for the 2011 UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics and Millennium Stadium for a new award for 2011 recognising an event’s contribution to environment and sustainability.
The last two awards of the evening featured Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games Organising Committee’s collecting a special award for Environment and Sustainability and lastly Lalit Modi, Founder of the IPL and Andrew Wildblood, Executive Vice President at IMG picking up the trophy for the Outstanding Contribution to Sports Event Management Award.
On day two, the standard was raised even further, with the morning session kicking off with the two Olympic Reports. Paul Deighton, Chief Executive of London 2012 and Dmitry Chernyshenko, President of Sochi 2014 gave their insights and shared the stage for Q and A from delegates.
Paul Deighton highlighted the importance of building the right team to get the job done and Dmitry Chernyshenko explained how the Winter Olympic Games has not only become the biggest construction project in the world, but is transforming Russia through its focus on opportunity, accessibility and the environment.
The day followed with sessions which included discussion Legacy with Mike Lee, OBE, Chairman of VERO providing advice and expertise, along with a practical session on the take-aways from event management – innovative and creative techniques, a sponsorship panel, event marketing and digital discussion and the day closed with a session on the biggest disasters in event management. Craig McLatchey from Event Knowledge Services and Peter Murphy from the Commonwealth Games Federation chatted to Kevin Roberts about their experiences with last years’ Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Outside of the conference programme, delegates were networking in the exhibition area and holding various side meetings in the lounge seating. ISEM also featured a bespoke online delegate networking service which operated before during and after the event. Delegates tweeted and posted messages throughout.
Delegates to the 6th International Sports Event Management Conference have delivered overwhelmingly positive feedback on an event which brought some of the most influential people in sport to the podium. We hope to see you again next year for 2012’s ISEM. |
