Regional healthcare pioneers honoured

Excellence singled out at Arab Health Achievement and Innovation Awards

Healthcare pioneers in the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Jordan have been honoured for their contributions towards regional innovation and development in the annual Arab Health Achievement and Innovation Awards.

The awards were made in front of more than 700 of the region’s leading healthcare professionals at a gala dinner last night (26 January 2010) at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Dubai.

Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (Seha) was the diamond sponsor of this year's Arab Health Awards. The gold sponsors were Roche, Miele, Cerner, dothealth, Microsoft Health Vault and Microsoft Amalga.

The Excellence in Imaging and Diagnostics Award went to Tawam Hospital, Al Ain, UAE, with the judges describing the hospital’s mammography screening programme as a “brilliant exposition of implementation of global standards in a difficult and controversial area.”

Mafraq Hospital, Abu Dhabi, UAE, received the Excellence in Surgery Services Award with the judges recording “excellent assimilation of a new technology and very good results.”

The award for Excellence in Laboratory Services went to the King Hussein Cancer Centre Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Jordan, described by the judges as a pioneer in the region.

The award for Excellence in Patient Centred Care was made to Al Corniche Hospital, UAE, which the judges said was providing an additional dimension in improving healthcare in Abu Dhabi.

The Rashid Hospital Trauma Centre in Dubai received the Excellence in Hospital Emergency Department Award and was described as “an exciting and interesting project” achieving excellent results.

Ambulatory Healthcare Services of the Abu Dhabi Health Services company (Seha 2) received the Human Resource Development Award. The judges said work being carried out by Seha 2 is “innovative and groundbreaking considering the tremendous human resources challenges that healthcare organisations are currently facing.”

For its successes in many clinical and technical areas, the judges gave the Excellence in Electronic Health Records Award to the National Guard Health Affairs of Saudi Arabia.

For an “excellent ongoing project,” the Excellence in Patient Safety Award went to Lifeline Hospital, Abu Dhabi, UAE.

An Outstanding Contribution of an Individual to the Middle East Healthcare Industry Award went to Dr Azad Moopen, Chairman of the Dr Moopen Group, Dubai.

The Arab Health Exhibition and Congress - the biggest healthcare event in the Middle East –  at Dubai World Trade Centre closes tomorrow (28 January 2010) and has seen 20% year-on-year growth with the opening of new halls adding a further 20,000 square metres of exhibition space.

Arab Health is the flagship event of IIR Middle East's Life Science Division and the region's premier event for the healthcare sector. A total of 2700 exhibiting companies from 70 countries are taking part.
